Spectrally-dependent attenuation of microwaves by vegetation canopies
نویسندگان
چکیده
A wide-band waveguide transmission system and measuring technique have been developed to obtain continuous attenuation spectra of microwaves by vegetation in the frequency range 0.8–10.0 GHz. Laboratory experiments have been performed in order to examine the spectral dependence of the attenuation by different trees and tree fragments. Some results are presented showing the distinct difference of the attenuation as a function of the wavelength, vegetation type and moisture content.

Attenuation of Electromagnetic Waves by Vegetation
An analytical overview of research involving EM waves attenuation by vegetation canopies in the frequency range 100...10000 MHz is given. Brief descriptions of objects of investigation and typical biometric features are presented. The models of vegetation as a continuous medium and as a collection of scatterers are considered. Dielectric properties of vegetative material are discussed. The rela...
متن کاملExploring the relationship between reflectance red edge and chlorophyll content in slash pine.
Chlorophyll is a key indicator of the physiological status of a forest canopy. However, its distribution may vary greatly in time and space, so that the estimation of chlorophyll content of canopies or branches by extrapolation from leaf values obtained by destructive sampling is labor intensive and potentially inaccurate. Chlorophyll content is related positively to the point of maximum slope ...
متن کاملInteractions between Fragmented Seagrass Canopies and the Local Hydrodynamics
The systematic creation of gaps within canopies results in fragmentation and the architecture of fragmented canopies differs substantially from non-fragmented canopies. Canopy fragmentation leads to spatial heterogeneity in hydrodynamics and therefore heterogeneity in the sheltering of canopy communities. Identifying the level of instability due to canopy fragmentation is important for canopies...
متن کاملAttenuation of water flow inside seagrass canopies of differing structure
An understanding of how habitat structure influences physical environmental processes that are important to organisms utilizing the habitat is a necessary basis for predicting biological responses to habitat variation. Seagrass meadows represent an important coastal nursery habitat that modifies the local flow environment. We used basic fluid-dynamic balances to construct a simple model of the ...

Regional analyses of biogeochemical processes can benefit significantly from observational information on land cover, vegetation structure (e.g., leaf area index), and biophysical properties such as fractional PAR absorption. Few remote sensing efforts have provided a suite of plant attributes needed to link vegetation structure to ecosystem function at high spatial resolution. In arid and semi...
